3-Day Salkantay Trek | High Mountain and Jungle Adventure to Machu Picchu

DESCRIPTION

The 3-day Salkantay Trek is a shorter but intense version of the wildest and most scenic trek to Machu Picchu. This alternative route to the Inca Trail has been listed by National Geographic as one of the most spectacular hikes in the world, and for good reason: it combines landscapes of imposing snow-capped peaks, high passes, cloud forests, tropical plantations, and the epic entrance to the Inca citadel.

Over three days, travelers cover more than 50 kilometers of breathtaking scenery, challenging the Andean geography in its purest form. From the foothills of Humantay Mountain to the imposing face of Salkantay (6,271 m above sea level), passing through crystal-clear rivers, high jungle, and ancient trails. The experience is enhanced by overnight stays in the heart of nature, a night in the town of Aguas Calientes, and the eagerly awaited final encounter with Machu Picchu, the jewel of the Andean world.

This trek is designed for physically fit adventurers seeking a direct connection with nature and a profound cultural experience in a short amount of time.

ITINERARY

🧭 Itinerary

🚶‍♂️ Day 1: Cusco – Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Collpapampa

The first day of the trek begins with an exciting journey to Soraypampa, the starting point of the trek and a plateau surrounded by snow-capped mountains. There, you breathe in the fresh air and begin to sense the immensity of the challenge ahead.

From this point, the ascent begins towards one of the most demanding but also most breathtaking sections of the route: the Salkantay Pass. As you progress, the landscape changes from Andean meadows to rocky and steep terrain, while the colossal Salkantay Mountain dominates the horizon. The effort is rewarded upon reaching the summit of the pass, located at 4,650 meters above sea level, where a spectacular view of glaciers, mountains, and deep valleys unfolds.

After celebrating the conquest of the pass, the descent into warmer climates begins. As you descend, the air becomes more humid, and the first signs of tropical vegetation appear. The environment changes dramatically: ferns, mosses, small streams, and cloud forests herald the transition to the high jungle.

Finally, you reach the campsite at Collpapampa, a place surrounded by lush vegetation, the sounds of nature, and a starry sky. Here you can rest after a challenging but unforgettable day.

Terrains traversed: Andean puna, high pass, cloud forest
Maximum altitude: 4,650 m (15,000 ft)
Distance covered: Approx. 22 km (14.5 mi)

🌳 Day 2: Collpapampa – Lucmabamba – Hydroelectric Plant – Aguas Calientes

The second day offers a completely different experience. Landscape becomes greener, denser, and more vibrant. The hike crosses the heart of the cloud forest, a unique ecosystem where Amazonian biodiversity and Andean culture converge.

During the trek, the trail winds through coffee plantations, fruit trees, wild orchids, and medicinal plants used by local communities. The warm, humid climate invites you to relax, observe exotic birds, butterflies, and, if you’re lucky, even some monkeys.

Upon arriving in Lucmabamba, you’ll enjoy a well-deserved rest and a revitalizing lunch in the heart of a small farming community. From there, you’ll take a vehicle to Hidroeléctrica, the starting point for the final hike of the day: a three-hour trek along the railway line, following the banks of the mighty Urubamba River.

This section, surrounded by towering mountains and lush vegetation, culminates in the vibrant town of Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Dinner will be served at a restaurant, followed by an overnight stay in a comfortable local hotel, where you’ll recharge for the next day’s grand visit.

Terrain traversed: cloud forest, railway tracks, cloud forest
Distance covered: Approx. 27 km

🏛️ Day 3: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Return to Cusco

The last day is dedicated entirely to the highlight of the trip: the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Very early in the morning, travelers ascend to the entrance of the archaeological site, either on foot or by tourist bus.

Upon entering, a magical moment unfolds: Machu Picchu appears amidst an Andean-jungle landscape, surrounded by mountains and bathed in the first light of dawn. During the guided tour, the main sectors of the complex are explored: sacred temples, ceremonial fountains, agricultural terraces, houses, and viewpoints.

The guide will share the main theories about the use and meaning of this archaeological wonder, revealing details about the Inca worldview and ancient engineering. After the tour, you’ll have free time to explore on your own, take photos, or even climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (if you have a prior reservation).

At the end of the tour, you’ll return to Aguas Calientes, where you can have lunch on your own before boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, transportation will take you back to Cusco, concluding this unforgettable experience amidst mountains, history, and nature.

RECOMMENDATIONS

🌟 Recommendations

➡️Acclimate in Cusco before the trek
The Salkantay Trek reaches altitudes of over 4,600 meters above sea level. It is essential to spend at least two days in Cusco beforehand to acclimatize to the climate and avoid altitude sickness.

➡️Prepare physically with prior hikes
Although it is an accessible experience for active people, a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Hiking or exercising before the trip will help you enjoy the trek more comfortably.

➡️ Pack appropriate clothing for extreme weather
During the trek, you will pass through very cold areas (such as the Salkantay Pass) and through the warm high jungle. It is essential to pack layered clothing, a windbreaker, a hat, gloves, and a change of clothes for the second day.

➡️Don’t wear brand new shoes
Your trekking boots should be waterproof, comfortable, and broken in beforehand. This will prevent blisters and discomfort during the hike.

➡️Pack a headlamp
Especially useful for the first few days of the day or at campsites. It’s also ideal in case of power outages.

➡️Protect your skin and health
Bring sunscreen, UV sunglasses, insect repellent, and a hat. Sun and insect exposure in the jungle can be intense.

➡️Stay hydrated
It’s vital to stay hydrated during the trek. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle or hydration pack, and the team will provide treated water daily.

➡️Bring cash (soles)
In some parts of the trail, you can buy snacks or use restrooms, and cash is required. You’ll also need it for tips for the team (optional).

➡️Respect nature and local culture
The trail passes through sacred sites and living communities. Be a responsible traveler: do not litter, do not touch wild animals, and follow your guide’s instructions.
