ITINERARY
Detailed Itinerary – Rainbow Valley Tour
Departure from San Pedro de Atacama
We begin with pick-up from your accommodation in San Pedro de Atacama. After the transfer, we enter the area where the Salt Mountain Range boasts a stunning collection of lunar landscapes.
First stop: Salt Mountain Range Viewpoint
The first stop is at a natural viewpoint from which you can contemplate the vastness of the valley. The guide explains the geological history of the area, formed by an ancient lake that, over millions of years, transformed into a landscape of salt and rock. From the edge of the viewpoint, visitors enjoy a visual spectacle: the red of the ground contrasts with the white of the salt and the deep blue of the sky, creating one of the most iconic views of the Atacama Desert.
Second Stop: Salt Formations and Canyons
Next, the tour continues to an area of canyons and crystalline salt formations. Travelers walk along narrow paths where the walls reflect the sunlight, creating a mineral glow that gives the feeling of walking inside a natural work of art. The guide explains how the wind, time, and lack of rain sculpted these unique formations, while visitors explore the most photogenic corners of the valley.
Third Stop: Dunes and the Magic Bus
Further on, the landscape changes again. The rock formations give way to large sand dunes, and in the middle of the vast desert, an unexpected sight appears: an old, abandoned bus, known as the “Magic Bus.” Painted in vibrant colors and surrounded by absolute silence, it has become one of the most popular symbols of Vallecito. Travelers take advantage of this spot to rest, take photographs, and watch the sun slowly descend, painting the sky with shades of orange, pink, and purple.
Fourth Stop: Sunset Viewpoint
The tour concludes at a natural viewpoint overlooking the sunset over the Andes Mountains. From this vantage point, the silhouette of the Licancabur volcano dominates the horizon. The golden light of dusk reflects on the salt flats, while the atmosphere becomes quiet and serene. It’s the perfect moment to enjoy a light drink, listen to the guide’s stories, and let yourself be enveloped by the tranquility of the desert.
Return to San Pedro de Atacama
As night falls, the group begins its return to San Pedro. The town’s lights appear in the distance, marking the end of an unforgettable experience. During the journey, travelers take away the day’s memories: the shimmering salt, the silence of the dunes, and the immensity of a landscape that seems to belong to another world. The tour concludes between 7:00 and 8:30 p.m., leaving each visitor with the feeling of having explored one of the most magical places in the Atacama Desert.
