Itinerary

Itinerary

» Day 1: Train Cemetery – Colchani – Uyuni Salt Flats – Incahuasi Island – Sunset – Coquesa

We begin with pickup from your accommodation in Uyuni and head to the Train Cemetery, a nostalgic and photogenic site that preserves Bolivia’s railway history. Then we visit Colchani, a small village where local artisans create products made from salt.

The journey continues into the majestic Uyuni Salt Flats, where we will explore the salt eyes, salt mounds, the Dakar Monument, the Flags Forest, and the first Salt Hotel. After lunch, we visit the iconic Incahuasi Island, a rocky oasis filled with giant cacti and panoramic views of the endless white desert.

At the end of the afternoon, we will enjoy a magical sunset over the salt flats before heading to the village of Coquesa, located at the foot of the impressive Tunupa Volcano, where we will spend the night.

» Day 2: Coquesa – Pre-Inca Mummies – Tunupa Viewpoint – Return to Uyuni

Early in the morning, we depart for the mummy caves, a pre-Inca archaeological site where a local guide will explain the history of these enigmatic Andean figures. Afterwards, we ascend to the Tunupa Volcano viewpoint, from where you can admire the immense Uyuni Salt Flats in all their grandeur.

After lunch at the lodge, we begin our return journey to Uyuni, making strategic stops along the way to take spectacular perspective photographs in the middle of the salt flats.

Recommendations

Tour Recommendations

Bring warm layered clothing: Mornings and nights in the highlands can be extremely cold, often below freezing. We recommend wearing several layers, including a thermal jacket, fleece, hat, gloves, and scarf to adapt easily to temperature changes.

Protect your eyes and skin: The sunlight reflected on the salt flats is very intense. Wear UV-protection sunglasses, sunscreen, and a cap or hat to avoid sunburn and glare.

Hydration and snacks: Bring drinking water, fruits, nuts, or energy bars to maintain your energy during long rides. It is also recommended to carry toilet paper for stops at rustic or community restrooms.

Camera and extra batteries: The Uyuni Salt Flats offer unique landscapes and incredible photography opportunities. Make sure to bring spare batteries or a power bank, as some accommodations may not have constant electricity.

Personal documents: Keep your passport or identification document handy, as it may be required for accommodation registration and occasional route checkpoints.

Cash (Bolivianos): Some services do not accept credit cards, such as entrance fees to Incahuasi Island, restrooms, souvenirs, or additional expenses during the tour.

Small backpack: Pack only what you need for one night, including a change of clothes, personal hygiene items, and essential accessories. This makes transportation easier and keeps your belongings organized during the tour.

Respect the natural environment: Do not leave trash, extract salt, or alter the landscape. The salt flats and surrounding areas are fragile ecosystems that require care and preservation.
