ITINERARIO

☀️ Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Sandoval Lake – Capybara Spotting – Amazonian Sunset

Pick-up at the Main Square of Puerto Maldonado

The experience begins with pick-up from the Main Square of Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the southern Peruvian rainforest. Our tourist transportation will take you to the access port of the Tambopata National Reserve while your guide shares fascinating insights about Amazonian biodiversity and the importance of preserving this unique ecosystem. During the journey, the urban landscape gradually fades away, giving way to the vast green expanse of the jungle.

Navigation on the Madre de Dios River

We begin a peaceful motorized boat journey along the majestic Madre de Dios River, one of the main arteries of the Peruvian Amazon. Throughout the trip, your naturalist guide will interpret the sounds of the rainforest and identify various bird species, including herons, parrots, kingfishers, and cormorants. This first encounter with the jungle marks the beginning of a day full of discovery.

Hike to Sandoval Lakeal

Upon arrival, we will embark on an approximately 45-minute walk through a trail surrounded by ancient trees and lush vegetation. Your guide will explain the ecological significance of the area and its extraordinary biodiversity. Along the way, it is possible to observe butterflies, capuchin monkeys, and even tapir tracks.

Canoe Ride on Sandoval Lake

We arrive at the breathtaking Sandoval Lake, one of the natural jewels of the Peruvian Amazon. Aboard a paddle canoe, we will glide across its calm waters surrounded by palm trees and wetlands. This privileged environment offers opportunities to observe howler monkeys, hoatzins, kingfishers, herons, and even giant river otters.

The tranquility of the lake and the mirror-like reflections of the surrounding vegetation create the perfect atmosphere for relaxation and contemplation.

Capybara Spotting in Their Natural Habitat

As the afternoon fades, the riverbanks come to life. This is the ideal moment to observe capybaras, the largest rodents in the world, gathering near the water in family groups. You may see them resting on the shore or swimming peacefully while your guide explains their behavior and their role within the Amazonian ecosystem.

The golden light of sunset provides ideal conditions for wildlife observation and nature photography.

Amazonian Sunset Experience

As the sun slowly sets, the sky is painted in stunning shades of gold, pink, and orange that reflect beautifully across the lake. The surroundings become magical as the sounds of the rainforest, the gentle breeze, and the changing light create a unique and unforgettable atmosphere.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most special moments of the entire experience.

Return to Puerto Maldonado

After sunset, we will begin our return journey by walking back along the same trail to the dock. From there, we will navigate back under the Amazonian sky, now illuminated by the first stars.
