ITINERARY
Detailed Itinerary – Puritama Hot Springs
Departure from San Pedro de Atacama
The adventure begins in the town of San Pedro de Atacama, where travelers are picked up from their accommodations and driven north. During the journey, the landscape gradually transforms: the arid desert blends with rock formations and vibrant colors as the route progresses towards the Andes Mountains. The drive takes approximately 40 minutes, the perfect amount of time to enjoy the panoramic views of the Altiplano and the contrasts of the Andean terrain.
On the Way to the Guatin Gorge
As the road climbs, you reach the Guatin Gorge, an area marked by the confluence of the Puritama and Purifica rivers. This spot is known as the “valley of the giant cacti,” as species grow here to over five meters tall. It’s a brief but ideal stop for taking photographs and breathing in the pure mountain air, with the sound of the water and the wind accompanying the experience.
Arrival at the Puritama Hot Springs
The tour continues to the heart of the gorge, where you’ll find the Puritama Hot Springs, a true oasis hidden in the middle of the desert. Its waters spring naturally from underground due to the geothermal activity of the Andes Mountains, reaching an average temperature of 33°C (91°F). This phenomenon occurs due to the proximity of volcanic materials that heat the water before it emerges to the surface.
The Natural Pools
At this location, visitors can enjoy eight natural thermal pools distributed along the Puritama River, interconnected by wooden walkways and surrounded by native vegetation. Each pool has its own unique charm: some are deeper and others wider, but all offer crystal-clear waters, perfect for relaxing and relieving the body of fatigue from days of exploring in the Atacama Desert.
Rest Areas and Services
The facilities are well-equipped for visitors. Each pool has changing rooms, restrooms, and wooden terraces, integrated with the natural environment without disturbing the landscape. The rest areas allow visitors to enjoy the sound of the river, observe the Andean flora, and contemplate the hills that surround the valley.
Return to San Pedro de Atacama
After a revitalizing experience at the hot springs, the return to San Pedro begins. During the descent, the landscape is painted with the hues of the sunset, and many travelers take advantage of the journey to enjoy the silence of the desert or take the last photographs of the day. Upon arriving in the village, the feeling is one of well-being and tranquility, with the body renewed and the mind calm.
